Also, the Act stated that the National Security Council and the United States Air Force needed to be formed. However, there was an important amendment in 1949, changing the name of the National Military Establishment to the Department of Defense and combining the cabinet-level Department of the Navy, Department of the Air Force, and Department of the Army into the Department of Defense.

The Significance of the U.S. Armed Forces
