The Structure of the U.S. Armed Forces

The modern United States Armed Forces consist of six forces, namely:

• Navy
• Marine Corps
• Army
• Space Force
• Coast Guard
• Air Force

Each of them has its own crucial tasks and responsibilities. The United States president is their commander in chief, and their administration is divided between two cabinet departments. The main cabinet department for the military is the Department of Defence but the United States Coast Guard is administered by the Department of Homeland Security.

The Beginnings of the U.S. Armed Forces

The first military of the U.S. Armed Forces was the Army - its earliest predecessor being the Continental Army created on 14 June 1775, even before the Declaration of Independence was signed.

A bit later, the Second Continental Congress formed the Continental Navy on 13 October 1775 and the Continental Marines on 10 November 1775. All of that was done in order to ensure the new nation is well-protected against the British Empire.

When the War of Independence was finished with the Treaty of Paris, those forces were demobilized. However, the present United States Navy (1794) and the United States Marine Corps (1798) were created soon afterwards.

When it comes to the U.S. Coast Guard, its roots trace back to the creation of the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790. After merging with the U.S. Life Saving Force in 1915, the Coast Guard emerged.

The U.S Air Forces developed as a separate service from the Army, which was officially confirmed in 1947.

The youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces is the Space Force, established as an independent service in 2019. Its origins are associated with the emergence of the Air Force Space Command, functioning since 1982.
