When other people see you in such apparel, they may feel more respect and appreciation for your sacrifice. It may also make them realize that there would be no freedom in the United States without the armed forces.
The Origins of the U.S. Navy
The origins of the U.S. Navy reach the colonial seafaring traditions - back then, there was a huge community of captains, sailors, and shipbuilders. At the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, Massachusetts even established its own Massachusetts Naval Militia.
During the Second Continental Congress, there was a debate over whether a national navy should be created. Supporters of this idea explained that it would improve coast protection and shipping security, and facilitate searching for help from other countries. However, the opponents argued that it was not reasonable to challenge the world’s leading naval force of that time - the British Royal Navy.
This dispute was solved by Commander in Chief George Washington when he ordered the ocean-going schooner to interdict merchantmen from Great Britain and informed Congress about the captures. Then, on October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress stated that two vessels would be bought and armed for a cruise against British merchant ships. With this resolution, the Continental Navy was established, and these forces are considered the first antecedent of the U.S. Navy.
The Missions of the U.S. Navy
There are three main areas that the U.S. Navy is responsible for. They are as the following:
Preparing naval troops essential for the effective prosecution of war
Improving tactics, techniques, weapons, aircraft, equipment, and organization of the naval combat and service elements
Maintaining naval aviation, which includes air transfer necessary for the maritime missions, land-based naval aviation, and all the air techniques and weapons used in the Navy’s activities and operations.
Also, in the U.S. training manuals, it is stated that the mission of the U.S. Armed Forces concerns also being “prepared to conduct prompt and sustained combat operations in support of the national interest.”
Moreover, there are five enduring functions of the U.S. Navy, namely:
Maritime security
Power projection
Deterrence
Sea control
Sealift
