The United States Armed Forces are extremely famous for their numerous accomplishments, often depicted in movies, books, video games, and more. They are divided into six branches, namely:
Army
Navy
Space Force
Marine Corps
Air Force
Coast Guard
The commander-in-chief is the American president, and he manages military policy with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense (DoD). They are both federal executive departments, and they function as the principal organs to carry out the military policy. All the six armed forces belong to the eight uniformed services of the United States (with the remaining two being the U.S. PHS Commissioned Corps and NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps).
The Beginnings of the U.S. Armed Forces
The origins of the U.S. Armed Forces reach the American Revolutionary War, where they have played a great role in shaping the United States as we know it now. Also, thanks to their victories in the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War, they contributed to forming a sense of national identity and unity. Another conflict where the predecessors of the present U.S. Armed Forces were very meaningful to the unity of our country was during the American Civil War because thanks to their devotion, the Confederacy did not separate from the republic.
The modern U.S. military framework was formed after World War II when the National Security Act of 1947 was applied. Some of the novelties it brought were the creation of the U.S. Air Force and the National Security Council, along with the introduction of the National Military Establishment, led by the secretary of defense. In 1949, there was an amendment changing the name of the National Military Establishment to the Department of Defense, and combining the cabinet-level Department of the Navy, Department of the Air Force, and Department of the Army into one Department of Defense.
