The History of the U.S. Air Force
The first antecedent of the U.S. Air Force emerged in 1907. The U.S. War Department made it a part of the U.S. Army, and 40 years later, after many changes concerning the organization, missions, and titles, it became an independent entity.
During World War II, nearly 68,000 American airmen sacrificed their lives to contribute to winning the conflict, with only the infantry suffering more casualties. In practice, USAAF (the U.S. Army Air Force) was generally an independent service branch during World War II, but its soldiers wanted official independence from the Army. On September 18, 1947, W. Stuart Symington was sworn into office, becoming the first secretary of the U.S. Air Force, and the branch gained formal independence.
Our Selection of U.S. Air Force Hats
One of the operations in which the U.S. Air Force played a great role was the Vietnam War.
