Basic Information on the U.S. Coast Guard

It was established by the U.S. Congress on 4 August 1790 on the initiative of Alexander Hamilton by the name of Revenue-Marine. It is worth noting that it is the oldest continuous seagoing service in our country. The main purpose of the Revenue-Marine service, headed by Alexander Hamilton himself, was to gather customs duties at U.S. seaports.

By the 1860s, the old name was given up and this service started to be called the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.

On 28 January 1915, under the U.S. Department of Treasury, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service was combined with the U.S. Life-Saving Service, creating the modern U.S. Coast Guard. Moreover, in 1939, the U.S. Lighthouse Service was also added there.

Now, the U.S. Coast Guard is one of the six American armed forces and it has participated in every major conflict that the USA was involved in since 1790.

The Statutory Missions of the U.S. Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard has eleven statutory missions that are stated by law. There are two kinds of them - homeland and non-homeland security missions.

The homeland security missions are:

• Maritime law enforcement
• Drug prevention
• Migrant interdiction
• Defense readiness
• Ports, waterways and coastal security (PWCS)

The non-homeland security missions are:

• Fisheries law enforcement (living marine resources)
• Search and rescue
• Marine environmental protection
• The International Ice Patrol and other ice operations
• Aids to navigation
• Marine safety
