The United States Navy is the most powerful navy when it comes to battle fleet tonnage. What’s more, it has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet. These forces have been often portrayed in movies, such as Crimson Tide, G.I. Jane, or the recent Greyhound, and they are famous for their courage, devotion, and persistence. Let’s learn about them in a bit more detail!
How the Navy Was Formed
The origins of the U.S. Navy are undoubtedly associated with the colonial seafaring tradition. Back then, there was a huge community of captains, sailors, and shipbuilders, and a lot of them then fought in the American Revolutionary War - interestingly, Massachusetts even established its own Massachusetts Naval Militia.
Forming a national navy was one of the disputable points of the Second Continental Congress. Some participants said that it was crucial to have it to provide protection for all the shipping, to defend the coast, and to create more possibilities for seeking support from other nations.
On the other hand, opponents of this idea said that it would be difficult to face the British Royal Navy, which was then considered a superior naval power. According to them, there was no point in forming a national navy.
This discussion came to an end thanks to the Commander in Chief George Washington, who commissioned the ocean-going schooner to prevent British merchantmen from coming and reported the captures to the Congress.
As a result, the purchase of two vessels was confirmed by the Continental Congress on 13 October 1775. Then, they were armed for a cruise against British merchantmen. This date is now celebrated by the U.S. Navy as their establishment day.
