U.S. Navy Mug
The U.S. Navy is the most famous maritime force in the world. They have been depicted in many movies, such as, for instance, Crimson Tide, G.I. Jane, or the recent Greyhound, and many other cultural references. This is because their historic achievements are awe-inspiring.
The U.S. Navy belongs to the Department of the Navy, together with the U.S. Marine Corps, its coequal sister service. The head of the whole department is the civilian Secretary of the Navy. It is itself a military department of the Department of Defense, led by the Secretary of Defense. When it comes to the most senior Navy officer serving in the Department of the Navy, they are called The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO).
The Origins of the U.S. Navy
The origins of the U.S. Navy can be found in the colonial seafaring tradition - when our fledgling nation needed to protect itself from outside forces at sea. At the initial phases of the American Revolutionary War, Massachusetts Naval Militia was created, which is also one of the significant roots of the modern day Navy. They were one of the smallest, but most technologically advanced outfits in the world at the time.
Later, in the Second Continental Congress, it was discussed whether it was reasonable to form a national navy. The main advantage of such a solution was that a navy could secure shipping and protect the coast, as well as make it less difficult to search for support from other states. However, one of the disadvantages mentioned by the opponents was that it might not be strong enough to face the British Royal Navy, considered to be the most powerful naval power of its time.
This debate ended thanks to George Washington, who was the Commander in Chief back then. Namely, he sent an ocean-going schooner to interdict merchantmen from Britain and then reported the captures to Congress. As a result, the Continental Congress confirmed the planned purchase of two vessels that were supposed to be prepared for a cruise against British merchantmen. It happened on 13 October 1775, and this date is considered to be the first emergence of the U.S. Navy.
The Missions of the U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy has three main missions to take care of:
- Maintaining naval aviation, which includes air transport necessary for naval missions, land-based naval aviation, and every weapon and air technique used by the Navy in their operations.
- Training naval forces vital for prosecuting war effectively if there is such a necessity.
- Improving tactics, weapons, organization, aircraft, equipment, and techniques used in naval combat and service elements.
The training manuals for the U.S. Navy say that the mission of the whole United States Armed Forces is "to be prepared to conduct prompt and sustained combat operations in support of the national interest."
