The History of the U.S. Army

In 1947, there was a significant split - the Air Force separated from the Army Air Forces and became a fully independent force. 

Some of the most important conflicts the U.S. Army took part in are:

• the Indian Wars of the 1790s
• the War of 1812 (1812–15)
• American Civil War (1861–65)
• Spanish–American War (1898)
• World War I (1917–18)
• World War II (1941–45)
• Korean War (1950–53)
• Vietnam War (1965–71)

When the Cold War ended in 1991, the U.S. Army started to concentrate mostly on Western Asia and participated in the 1991 Gulf War and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
