U.S. Air Force Jacket
After serving many years in the United States Air Force, former airmen can enjoy their retirement. Even though they do not wear their uniforms anymore, they can still express their pride and love for the armed forces by wearing patriotic apparel.
One of the most popular product categories available in our online store is a U.S. Air Force jacket. By wearing it, you can let everyone know you devoted a lot of effort to serve your country as an airman. Being a part of the U.S. Air Force, with its rich history, as well as essential aims and missions, is definitely a reason to be proud of.
The Origins of the U.S Air Force
At the dawn of the new century, in December 1903, the Wright brothers managed to fly their first plane in Ohio. With this innovation, the American armed forces were able to develop new strategies, weapons, and ways to fight.
Just four years later, the first antecedent of the U.S. Air Force was established by the U.S. War Department as a division of the U.S. Army.
Previously, wars could only be happening on battlefields and high seas. When World War I broke out in 1914, skies began to become the fighting spaces as well. Fixed-wing aircraft participated in both aerial dogfights and ground attacks, with the United States ready to take the lead.
The devotion of the American airmen continued during World War II when nearly 68,000 of them sacrificed their lives to help to defeat the Nazis (only the infantry lost more soldiers in this conflict).
Despite working independently in practice, the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) wanted to make it official. It finally happened when on July 26, 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 which formally declared the establishment of the separate Department of Air Force. Around two months later the first secretary of the Air Force, was sworn to the office - it was W. Stuart Symington who took this honor.
The Core Missions of the U.S. Air Force
After the U.S Air Force emerged, its five core missions were established, and they have not changed significantly since 1947. Their primary aim is to deliver what the forces refer to as “global vigilance, global reach, and global power.”
The core missions are:
- Global integrated ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance)
- Air superiority
- Global strike
- Rapid global mobility
- Command and control
